Pay Attention If You Hear Clicking from Your Furnace… Here’s Why

Monday, January 3rd, 2022

comfort-first-logoWe want to start off by saying if you hear clicking from your furnace as it cycles on and off, and the sound hasn’t changed since you’ve gotten your furnace, then you might actually be hearing your ductwork shift a bit as the temperature of the air inside of it fluctuates. This is normal, and as long as there is no change and you’re having your furnace professional inspected once a year through maintenance, you have nothing to worry about.

If, however, a new clicking sound has started, or it sounds like it’s coming from another part of the system, then you’re right to be alarmed. This clicking could be coming from a crack on the heat exchanger, and it’s clicking as it contracts back into place when your furnace cycles off and cools down. Why is this a problem? Read on to find out!

Why Is a Furnace Heat Exchanger a Big Deal?

Monday, December 20th, 2021

furnaceIf you’re like the majority of homeowners in our area, you have a gas-powered furnace in your home to keep you and your family comfortable all winter long. A furnace is a great choice, as it is a powerful and efficient source of heating. Today’s furnace models have a higher efficiency rating than those of even just a decade ago, with the highest AFUE rating (AFUE stands for Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency) for a gas-powered furnace being 98%. Trust us when we say this is efficient heating!

In addition to your heater’s efficiency, you want to be able to rely on it’s safety, too! This isn’t to say that a heating system is inherently dangerous. However, if your furnace isn’t adequately maintained, it can become so. This is especially true when you’re using a gas furnace over an electric furnace.

The most common risk to safety when it comes to furnace use, especially an older one, is a damaged heat exchanger component. Even if you don’t currently have a problem with a heat exchanger, if your furnace is 10-15 years old, it’s time to start considering an upgrade. We’ll dive more into the “why” of this below!

Here at Comfort First, we understand how important it is to protect yourself and your family. So if you hear any suspicious sounds coming from your heater, please don’t hesitate to schedule an inspection and potential repairs with our team. Heed These Signs You Need Furnace Repairs

Monday, November 8th, 2021

duct-running-from-ac-to-furnaceWhen you live somewhere that needs heating systems as much as our homes do, you don’t want to sit around worried that yours could break down at any moment. Of course, unless you’ve never had professional maintenance done before and don’t know the signs that your heater is struggling, this probably won’t happen… but what if you don’t know the signs to look for that indicate your furnace is struggling?

That’s what we are here for!

First, the best way to defend against heavy repair needs is with regular professional maintenance. It doesn’t matter whether you have a gas furnace or an electric-powered one, professional tune-ups should be done once a year to help your heater work as effectively and efficiently as possible, for as long as possible. Additionally, maintenance helps prevent up to 85% of the repairs your furnace might ever need in that lifespan.

Now, that doesn’t mean your furnace will never need repairs. Some repairs are inevitable since just like any other large appliance your furnace does suffer from wear and tear. Here is how to spot the signs that your furnace may need repair, even if you’re in between maintenance sessions.

Why Your Furnace Heat Exchanger Matters

Monday, April 12th, 2021

natural-gas-heaterIf you’re like many homeowners in our area, you are likely using a gas-powered furnace to heat your home each winter. Gas furnaces are great options for most homeowners around here. Today’s models have a much higher efficiency rating than those of even a decade ago, with the highest AFUE rating (Annual Fuel Utilization Ratio) being 98%.

Efficiency is one thing though. It’s great, but what you really want is for your furnace to work safely. This isn’t to say that that they are inherently dangerous—they’re not. But if you don’t take care of your gas furnace properly—with routine annual maintenance and timely repairs, then the system can become dangerous.

The most common culprit of an unsafe furnace is a damaged heat exchanger. This is more likely to happen in an aging furnace versus one that’s under 7-10 years old but it’s still important to be aware of.
