Make Sure Your AC System is Ready for Next Year

air-conditioner-with-clipboard-on-topWith temperatures already cooling down for the year, it’s time to shut off AC systems for the season and turn our attention to our heaters. Have you scheduled heating maintenance yet? If not, now is the time! Maintenance allows our technicians to thoroughly and carefully inspect your system, adjusting any components that need it and alerting you to repair needs so you can get them on your schedule right away.

But wait, don’t forget about your air conditioner. Just because you may not need it again until next year doesn’t mean it should be ignored. Besides, if your air conditioner had even the smallest issue this past summer, it’s a good idea to have the system checked now, rather than waiting on it—waiting can lead to more serious problems.

Does Your Air Conditioner Need Repair Before Next Year?

The good news is that if your air conditioner does need repair, it’s pretty good at showing you signs and symptoms.

While you should never try to formally diagnose or repair a malfunctioning cooling system on your own, since they contain dangerous components such as refrigerant, requiring special licensing to deal with, you can spot the signs you need AC repair, and then give our pros a call. Keep reading to learn about some of the common signs you have an AC problem on your hands.

Low Airflow: Air that’s not whooshing through your HVAC system’s ventilation system with the power you’d expect can be the sign of a big problem. No matter the cause, it typically means that cold air is trapped within your system, and this can cause problems like coils freezing over.

In addition, lowered airflow means your system can’t do its job very efficiently or successfully. You might try turning your thermostat down, thinking this will help your cause. However, this only will raise your bills and will do nothing to improve your comfort.

One thing you can check and try on your own is changing out the air filter. When that filter becomes too clogged up with debris and dust, it can absolutely impede airflow. However, if you’re eliminated this as a possibility, then it’s time to call in our pros.

Odd Noises: When we talk about odd noises, we’re talking about anything outside of the sounds you hear when your heater is running as it should—you’ll typically always hear the sound of air coming through the vents, or the hum of the fans while the system is operating.

But if you also notice sounds such as banging, clanging, buzzing, or even hissing, it’s the sign of a problem. Take hissing, for example. This is likely the sign of a refrigerant leak. This is a problem no matter what, but an even bigger one if you have an aging system.

If your air conditioner is a couple decades old, chances are it uses R-22 refrigerant. This refrigerant has already stopped being produced in the U.S. and as of this January, all R-22 will be phased out and unable to purchase.
