How Healthy Is the Air You Breathe?

Monday, October 12th, 2020

outside-of-home-with-ac-unitIt’s not surprising that many homeowners these days are focusing on germ transmission–or rather how to limit germ transmission–in their homes. With the COVID-19 outbreak, many households search for ways to keep their homes healthier and safer. And while we can’t guarantee there is any one product or service out there that will eliminate germ transmission, there are absolutely steps you can take to reduce that risk, while staying aware of the guidelines provided by the CDC and elsewhere in regards to COVID-19 development.

Read on as we uncover some of the indoor air quality services, tasks, and products that can help keep your home cleaner and family healthier in general. By implementing certain practices, like hand washing and covering our mouths when we cough or sneeze, we can improve our own immunities and limit our risk of virus and germ transmission. Plus following the tips below will help.

Have Your HVAC System Cleaned

Note that we didn’t say “clean your HVAC system.” Cleaning your HVAC system is an important part of professional maintenance, and should be left to trained and experienced technicians. By keeping important components clean, not only will the systems work more efficiently, but also it will help your indoor air quality. These components include:

  • The blower fan
  • The evaporator and condenser coils
  • The air filter (this is one component that you can and should be changing or cleaning on your own)

Keeping your HVAC system clean is the first step of maintaining healthy indoor air inside your home. But it’s definitely not the only step. In fact, the air filter we just mentioned isn’t even there to protect the indoor air quality (it’s just that it doesn’t hurt!)

Next: Address Your Ducts

Air flows through your ventilation system–the air ducts–and exits through the vents in each one of your rooms. If your ductwork is packed with particles such as allergens, mold spores, and other debris from outside, then these particles can get blown into your household.

It’s estimated that about 40 pounds of dust can accumulate in your home in the span of a year. You have to guess that some of that exists within your air ducts.

Last, But Not Least: Consider Your Indoor Air Quality Products

Having a clean ductwork system and HVAC system is just the start. Now it’s time to consider whether or not you have the right indoor air quality products and services in place. For instance, have you considered a whole-house air purification system? This is also known as an air cleaner, and is a great choice for most homes.

There are a number of different air purifier types, with some that tackle particles already in the air, and then there is the UV air purifier. A UV air purifier is installed directly into your air ducts and eliminates mold, mildew, and bacteria before it even has the chance to enter your indoor air.
