It Might Be Time for a New Furnace If…

furnace-systemFurnaces are very sturdy and can last well over a decade, but no heating system lasts forever! And when your furnace system is showing signs that it’s time to upgrade, it is important to pay attention. Waiting too long can leave you with an inefficient system at best, and a completely broken-down furnace system at worst.

Replacing the heating system in your home can be the difference between a natural transition to a new heater or an interruption to your quality of life while you figure out how to stay warm until you get a new system. So as the weather cools down, keep an eye out for the following signs that your furnace does, in fact, need to be replaced.

Your System Is 10-15 Years Old

Do you know the age of your furnace? There’s a good chance that you moved into the home you’re in now and thereby inherited the furnace you’re currently using. It’s actually pretty common for homeowners to not know the exact age of their furnace!

If you don’t know yours, take a look at the serial number of your heating system. We can tell you how old it is!

If you find out, or you already know, that it is over a decade old, then it’s likely time to consider a replacement. A furnace that is this old simply cannot work as efficiently as it once did and is nearing retirement age for sure. It’s also a lot more likely to break down unexpectedly on you.

You Need to Call for Repairs Frequently

It is relatively normal to need a repair every couple of years on your furnace, especially as it gets older. Your furnace is not immune to natural wear and tear, so it makes sense that components will need adjusting, repair, or even replacement.

What’s not normal, however, is needing to call for repairs 2-3 times a year. This is a sign that your furnace has reached an age where it just can’t keep up with the demand you’re placing on it anymore.

It’s a good rule of thumb that if your next furnace repair, or set of furnace repairs, is going to cost half of what the system is worth, it makes more economical sense to replace the unit altogether.

You Notice Cold Spots in the Home

Have you noticed that it seems like some parts of your home aren’t getting the heat they need from your furnace? While this could be a ductwork problem, and that’s what you should have checked on first, it could alternatively be that your furnace simply no longer has the power to push the heated air it’s generating out to all the vents.

This might be the case if your ductwork is in good shape but the areas of the home not getting heat are in the back of the house/the furthest point away from the actual furnace.

These are just a few signs that it’s time for a new furnace. If you suspect your furnace has problems we haven’t outlined here, it’s always a good idea to call our team!
